Resources for men's health

Specialising in the care of men with Prostate Cancer has made it clear that more needs to be done.

Sadly, every year in Australia, over 18,000 men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. As an urologist, I spend considerable time performing surgery, particularly robotic surgery. I spend a lot of time discussing Prostate Cancer with men talking about their journey.

It is becoming very evident that education is of the utmost importance. I am mindful that to win the fight against Prostate Cancer we must continue to pursue research and an integrated approach to care by education. Following diagnosis, some men may live in fear.

The information on this resource website will enable you to form an opinion about the treatment options, side affects, and complications and assist you in the return to a quality of life. Treatment can affect sexual function, continence and long term outcome.

This resource website and the DVD's available will enable men to make informed decisions, not only for themselves, but for their partner and family.

Everyone needs to know what they are facing, this is why the information contained in these DVD's is so powerful.

Currently there are 12 DVD's available covering the following:

  1. So, how do you choose?
  2. Robotic Surgery "The Journey"
  3. Pelvic Floor Exercises, Moving Forward
  4. Prevention and Localised Prostate Cancer
  5. Advanced Prostate Cancer & Hormone Treatments
  6. Cured of Prostate Cancer "What about Quality of Life"
  7. Return to Potency after Prostate Cancer
  8. Prostate Cancer Treatments "Managing Side Effects"
  9. Prostate Cancer "Integrative Medicine – Taking Control"
  10. Prostate Cancer "Urinary Control"
  11. Advanced Prostate Cancer — by Professor Charles Myers
  12. Prostate Cancer "Managing the Mind"

I wish you all the best with your journey.

about phillip stricker

As an urologist, it was logical that care for prostate cancer and sexual function go hand in hand and so I became the first person in Australia to specialise exclusively in the care of men with prostate cancer.

I was frustrated to find that, for men with prostate cancer, the best treatment was not available in Australia. So I commenced my journey to ensure the best possible outcomes for each and every one of my patients. This has meant an ongoing worldwide search for innovative treatments, research and collaborations.

In February 2006 I commenced the first robotic program in NSW at St Vincent's Hospital. Since then I have performed over 700 robotic prostate cancer cases.

Whilst times and technologies change, I continue to perform open surgery and, to date, have performed in excess of 4,000 open prostate cancer surgery cases. In non-surgical treatments I was the first to use brachytherapy in Australia. I continues to use it where cancers are extremely aggressive, particularly if they are unlikely to be able to be cured with surgery alone, and have now performed over 1,000 brachytherapies. The experience gathered in all these treatments has been invaluable yet only part of the answer. Research, is the other part. I have been privileged to be able to collaborate with some pretty amazing people. Amongst the best are the the excellent research team at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Without them it would be impossible to define and document the best possible outcomes for my patients at all stages of the condition.

So how do you choose?

A guide for men and their partners on how to choose a treatment option for prostate cancer.

In authorising the content for this DVD my main concern is to help men and their families to better understand the disease and treatment options.

I have spent over 20 years researching and treating Prostate Cancer. In that time I have performed the largest series of nerve sparing radical prostatectomy surgeries (many now being performed robotically) and brachytherapies in Australasia.

Robotic surgery now offers us a less invasive way of performing radical prostatectomy and is being increasingly utilised.

It is from this position of being able to offer most forms of therapy for Prostate Cancer that my team and I can give the sort of information and advice that will assist patients to understand the appropriate treatment for their particular localised Prostate Cancer.

And then for each patient, tailor an optimal treatment program.

This DVD will be helpful to any man, and his family, affected by Prostate Cancer. However, it is particularly designed for men who have localised Prostate Cancer (cancer which has not spread beyond the prostate gland).

Advanced Prostate Cancer & Hormone Treatments

Although there is a trend toward earlier detection of Prostate Cancer, unfortunately many men are not diagnosed until the disease has progressed to a later stage.

When cancer spreads to neighbouring tissues or to other parts of the body such as the bones, this is called advanced (metastatic) Prostate Cancer or secondary cancer.

It can take many months or years before Prostate Cancer spreads to other parts of the body.

This DVD will be a very important resource for men who commenced this journey.

Prostate Cancer Treatments "Managing Side Effects"

Like other medicines, treatments for advanced Prostate Cancer can have both benefits and side effects - and these can vary between men.

It is important you speak with your doctor about these, as side effects can often be managed to improve quality of life.

This DVD includes interviews with Associate Professor Phillip Stricker, Professor Kerryn Phelps, Dr Michael Lowy - Sexual Health Pysician and Dr Deepi Miller - Psychiatrist

Prostate Cancer "Integrative Medicine - Taking control"

There is substantial evidence from international research and clinical experience to show that an integrative approach to Prostate Cancer is the gold standard. Active surveillance requires careful and intensive lifestyle management rather than simply a "watch and wait" approach. For men who choose surgery or radiotherapy, integrative medicine provides a necessary adjunct to secondary prevention. In patients with advanced Prostate Cancer an integrative approach, especially with hormonal therapy, is beneficial.

This DVD includes interviews with Associate Professor Phillip Stricker, Professor Kerryn Phelps, Dr Michael Lowy - Sexual Health Pysician, Jamie Rose Fronzek - Nutritionist and Dr Deepi Miller - Psychiatrist
